UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Friends and family gather Thursday night to remember Stephanie Martin and Anthony Schnell, the couple killed as they were crossing the street last Thursday in the same spot where the pair lost their lives.
Stephanie's mom, Virginia Martin, remembers her as outgoing and fun loving. Anthony's grandfather, Robert Schnell, says Anthony would help anyone out despite challenges in his own life. He says the boyfriend and girlfriend were crossing the street on a frontage road just south of Samuelson last Thursday night when they were hit by a car.
"What I'll miss most is she's always been with me. She's 26 years old and she's always been with me. It'll be hard to be without her," said Martin.
"Being with him, me and him and his brother would get together every Sunday morning at Johnny Pamcakes and talk about what had happened the week before," said Schnell.
No charges have been filed against the driver that hit the couple. Stephanie's family says they're having a benefit for her Sunday at the Rockton Inn from 1 until 5 p.m. Her funeral is planned for Monday.
