Two suspects were arrested on felony charges Tuesday for the death of a 9-year-old boy in Freeport in July 2018.

Robert D. Davidson, 32, and Antoinette Fane, 35, were arrested in connection to the death of 9-year-old-boy Robert De'Yahre Davidson.

Freeport police say Robert D. Davidson was the victim's biological father. Police say De'Yahre Davidson, who lived in Forest Park, was visiting Davidson at the time of his death.

Davidson was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of endangering the life of a child, two counts of obstructing justice and one count of intimidation.

Fane was Davidson's live-in girlfriend with no biological relation to De'Yahre Davidson. She was charged with endangering the life of a child and two counts of obstruction of justice.

A year-plus investigation began after officers were called to an apartment on N. Grove Street around 11:15 p.m. on July 15, 2018. A neighbor reported hearing sounds of possible domestic violence and the sound of a child crying.

When police arrived, Davidson and Fane denied there was a domestic violence situation. The two initially produced two children, ages 11 and 13, to responding officers.

Officers then left the scene, but were then called back after a 911 call of a child not breathing at the same residence. De'Yahre Davidson was found unresponsive on the bedroom floor.

De'Yahre Davidson was taken to a hospital, but later pronounced dead later in the morning hours of July 16, 2018. Police say De'Yahre Davidson was not one of the two children who they met with the preceding evening.

An autopsy later determined that De'Yahre Davidson died from cardiac arrhythmia due to dehydration and multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

De'Yahre Davidson suffered numerous welts and abrasions, and appeared as though he had been struck with a belt, according to Freeport Police Chief Matt Summers.

After investigating the case for more than a year, Freeport police and FBI agents made two arrests Tuesday. Davidson was taken into custody in the 1600 block of 17th Avenue in Rockford, while Fane was arrested in the 200 block of Union Street in Byron.

Davidson and Fane are being held at the Stephenson County Jail on a $750,000 bond (10%) and $40,000 bond (10%) respectively.

Charges were announced Wednesday at a news conference, which is embedded below:
