DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) – A 13-year-old student admits to posting a fake threat to DeKalb schools on social media.
The DeKalb Police Department learned of a threat to middle and high schools made around 7:15 a.m. on social media. The post referenced a rumor that someone planned to take guns to a school.
Police began an investigation and stationed officers at every school in the community. All of the district's schools were placed on soft lockdown.
A 13-year-old male student was identified as the person who sent the message. He admitted to seeing a similar message from a different state and decided to send his own message on social media in DeKalb. He claims the message was a hoax and that there was no threat of violence to the school.
The investigation is ongoing to ensure there are no weapons linked to the teenager and that his behavior is addressed.
