ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- It was an unexpected surprise when volunteers for the Salvation Army found a rare coin that was donated to a local red kettle.
This wasn't just any coin this golden coin can be valued between 8 hundred to 9 hundred dollars. The face of the coin has the Statue of Liberty while the back shows a bald eagle. The coin was found in a plastic case in a red kettle at the Schnucks located on East State Street. According to the Winnebago County Salvation Army, they hope this can inspire people to continue to make donations no matter the dollar amount.
"It came in a plastic case so it was protected against scratching from other coins so obviously the person who put it in there knew what they were doing and they had an awareness of value of coin and it was pretty neat. I've been doing this a lot of years so it always warms my heart to see the generosity in people,” said Major Mark Martsolf, the Winnebago County Coordinator for the Salvation Army said.
