ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) ----- Two teenage boys took their community into their own hands and cleaned up their neighborhood playground after it was vandalized last week.
16-year-old Jacob Saenz and his 14-year-old cousin Jojo were used to spending their warm days hanging out in Rockford’s Mariposa Park.
But, on one visit, they found it littered with profanity and inappropriate images, and with this being a place that they brought their one year old niece almost daily, they knew they had to do something.
"We did it mainly because my niece and other neighborhood kids, we just didn't like words on it," said Jacob Saenz.
"When they got home Jacob had mentioned is there possibly a program through the City of Rockford where I can volunteer to clean it. And I said well I don't know and the very next day Jojo came over to spend the night and the boys just decided to get up and go do it themselves," said Kathryn Saenz, Jacob’s mother.
The boys hope their efforts can stop people from vandalizing other areas, by seeing what it means to those who use them.
