TRO filed in last-ditch effort to save Chancery, halt demolition

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Demolition for the Rockford Chancery is expected to begin in upcoming weeks after landmark status for the building was denied earlier this month.

However, one group is making a last-ditch effort to save the building.

A coalition of historic preservationists and Piety Hill neighbors have requested for a temporary restraining order to stop demolition from happening.

The complaint alleges that Rockford City Council failed to follow proper provisions in the ordinance denying historic landmark status to the Piety Hill properties.

An initial hearing for the request could happen as soon as tomorrow. As of Thursday afternoon, a permit for demolition has not been granted.
