Suspected car thief killed from officer-involved shooting in Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. (WIFR) -- Police say a suspected car thief was killed Tuesday after an officer-involved shooting in Beloit.

The Beloit Police Department has withheld the name of the victim and three officers involved. No officers were hurt.

The shooting happened around 11:45 a.m. near the area of Henry Avenue and Riverside Drive.

During that time, the Rock County Sheriff's Office noticed a vehicle he believed to be stolen in the area, then reported hearing shots fired.

Shortly later, officers located a suspect near the 1800 block of Harrison Avenue. Police say the suspect was observed to be armed.

Three officers reportedly fired at the suspect, who was fatally shot and pronounced dead around 12:25 p.m.

Merrill, Aldrich and Robinson school districts were placed on soft lockdown during the incident, meaning school continued but no one was allowed in or out of the building.

Three officers have been placed on administrative duty while the death is under investigation. The incident is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.
