A Rockford man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly beating, strangling and sexually assaulting a woman in Winnebago County.

Authorities arrested 49-year-old Charles E. Swift.

Swift faces three counts of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery charges from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. He was also charged for aggravated fleeing to elude and driving after revocation by Roscoe Police.

Rockton Police learned the woman was in need of help around 6:30 a.m. She reported to authorities that she had been taken by force from a retail establishment in Rockford by her ex-boyfriend on Tuesday evening.

The woman reportedly told authorities she was taken to the Sugar River Forest Preserve in rural Winnebago County, where she alleges she was beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted.

Authorities say the woman was able to escape from the suspect at a local gas station in Rockton.

Deputies assisted Rockton and Roscoe police Wednesday for arresting the suspect after a short pursuit along IL Route 2 and IL Route 75. The suspect, later identified as Swift, fought with deputies and officers, but he was safely taken into custody.

Swift is being held in Winnebago County Jail. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty by the court of law.
