A new study shows Illinois homeowners may be paying more on property taxes than most of the country.

Illinois was ranked with the second-highest real estate property taxes in the U.S. in WalletHub's latest study. The state's 2.31 percent tax rate was only lower than New Jersey (2.44 percent).

The study compiled information from the U.S. Census Bureau and ranked each of the states based on “median real-estate tax payment” and the “median home price” in each state.

The median home value in Illinois was $179,700, while annual taxes for the median home were valued at $4,157.
