Staying safe this weekend

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - - Since the ice will be hitting our area first followed by the snow it's important to not be deceived by the top layer of snow. The ice underneath is very dangerous and can potentially cause serious injuries if you fall.

Trauma medial director Dr. James Cole at Swedish American Hospital said some of the most common injuries he sees during this time of year are broken arms as people extend their arm to break their fall however Cole said more serious injuries can also occur.

"Problematic injuries are when people fall and hit their head," Cole said. "They slip right back, hit their head, lacerate their scalp and unfortunately sometimes they cause bleeding into their brain which is potentially life threatening."

Cole urges people to stay indoors if at all possible and be careful when walking on untreated surfaces.
