ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Rockford Police Department is getting students involved in the fight against domestic violence in our community by holding an art contest to raise awareness and spark conversations about the epidemic.

Thirteen artists submitted pieces that highlights the impact of domestic violence. Rockford Lutheran student Mirim Yeum won first place for her work that shows a young boy crying while his parents fight with one another. She says the topic of domestic violence is very important and wanted to share the message through her artwork.

“If my family ever experienced like this domestic violence especially I thought about my younger sister, how she feels and it would be very painful and bad for everyone so that's what I was inspired by,” said Yeum.

Yeum participated in the contest last year. She says she was surprised but very excited that her piece won this year.
