The 17th annual "Cop on a Rooftop" fundraiser returns Friday. Officers will stand on the rooftops of Dunkin' locations to raise money for the law enforcement torch run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

“Cop on a Rooftop” events have raised more than $4.8 million dollars for Special Olympics Illinois over the last 16 years. Officers hope to surpass last year's donation total of $871,000.

In the Stateline, Rockford, Freeport and Rochelle are among the police departments participating.

“We love being a part of this event each year,” said Lt. Walt Felton, Rockford Police Department. “Special Olympics Illinois is a cause the Rockford Police Department champions for often, and we are grateful to have businesses in our community and other law enforcement agencies show their support too.”

Officers will be at the following locations on Friday from 5 a.m. to noon:

-3225 11th Street (Rockford)
-4105 Charles Street (Rockford)
-1811 S. West Avenue (Freeport)
-213 IL-38 (Rochelle)

Each guest who makes a donation to the torch run will receive a free donut coupon. If you donate at least $10, you can also receive an Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run mug and a coupon for a free medium hot coffee.
