South Beloit chip making plant catches fire

SOUTH BELOIT, Ill. (WIFR) - A South Beloit chip making plant is engulfed in smoke after a fire breaks out with workers still in it.

Fire crews responded to a call just after 8 p.m.Tuesday at the Axium Food Plant in the 200 block of Oak Grove Avenue in South Beloit.

Axium Foods is a chip manufacturing company. Officials tell 23 News the fire started in a fryer on the production line and spread down a conveyor into a tumbling system. There were employees inside at the time, but the good news is no one is injured, they all evacuated immediately. The fire department cleared the building of the smoke and declared it safe to go inside.

According to the plant supervisor, there is about $50,000 of damage to the equipment, and $25,000 in production loss.
