Smelly situation in New Milford raises concerns

New Milford residents hired a lawyer to discuss legal action for a strong odor from at least two nearby landfills.
"The number one reason why we moved out here is for the country air freshness, you know being out of the city," says Brenda Weatherford, who has lived in New Milford for 11 years. "You wake up at 2 in the morning, and it smells like worse that rotten eggs, worse than everything I've ever smelled."
Weatherford lives three miles away from the Orchard Hills Landfill and the Winnebago Landfill. She says she gets headaches every morning, and believes it could be from the gasses.
Other neighbors agree the issue is growing. "I don't want to have my windows open if it smells like that out here, because then your whole house smells, and it's just not pleasant," says Ashley Nelson, who moved to New Milford 10 years ago.
Now, the community is taking its concerns a step further.
"There's been a lot of postings on the New Milford community Facebook page, they have flyers going around about a meeting to act against the landfills," explains Nelson.
Those meetings will be at Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 23 Thursday night 5-8 and Sunday 1-4.
Weatherford says she expects a large turnout. "Everybody is coming together because we're sick of the smell, we're just tired of the smell, and then we're wondering 'what's it really doing to us?'"
