STILLMAN VALLEY, Ill. (WIFR) -- With nearly 40 years of chess coaching under his belt, Phil Bratta could soon have another accolade to add to his experience.
The long-time Stillman Valley High School Chess Coach has been nominated as the Illinois Chess Coaches Association's Coach of the Year.
The Meridian School District says Bratta was nominated by another coach from the Northern Illinois Chess League, where he is currently head of the West Division.
“He has kept the NICL Conference going through more decades than many coaches have been alive. Without his calm, driving presence, the NICL would not be the same,” said the Meridian CUSD #223 School District in a statement.
Bratta has guided Stillman Valley's chess program to three state titles since taking over in 1980. The program is in contention for another state title this year.
The Meridian School District says Bratta has been previously nominated for ICCA Coach of the Year.
