Sharefest team-leader gives back to community

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- "Love" is the word Sharefest's Brian Hoemke uses to describe the organization. "Love for the community and love for its people."

Hoemke, a Belvidere native, says Sharefest is more than an opportunity to volunteer, it's a chance for him to bring life back into the Rockford area. He got his start in the organization 12 years ago through his church. Now he is a team-leader.

"Even though he's one of our team leaders he rallied his team from work and brought them with him today," says friend and site leader Jessica Westberg. "That's the kind of community we build with Rockford Sharefest. We link arms and work together, and we really have become great friends through it all."

Sharefest is designed to renovate areas in the city that community members utilize. The projects this summer include YMCA Children's Learning Center and Davis Park.

Hoemke says it's no secret Rockford experienced hardships, but he believes fixing locations through volunteering at Sharefest can help.

"I just absolutely love it."
