WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- A settlement has been reached to resolve a lawsuit filed by Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana against the county.

The lawsuit was filed in March against the county board, chairperson Frank Haney and county treasurer Sue Goral. It alleges the budget the county board passed for 2019 was illegal, interfering with the sheriff's ability to keep residents safe.

The lawsuit also claims that the board interfered with the daily operation of Caruana’s department and required him to seek board approval for budget amendments.

The terms of the tentative settlement are not yet known. It is pending board approval, but could take effect within the next two weeks.

We will update as more information becomes available.
