WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- A new settlement ends a lawsuit filed by Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana against the county board.
Caruana and the county board agreed to resolve the lawsuit in July. The two sides recently agreed to terms.
The settlement requires the county board to approve a budget amendment of $1.7 million for the sheriff’s department’s 2019 budget. The money will pay for the salaries of 24 deputies.
The settlement also requires Sheriff Caruana to pay fees for his special prosecutor on behalf of the lawsuit.
The lawsuit, which was filed in March, alleged the budget the county board passed for 2019 was illegal, interfering with the sheriff's ability to keep residents safe.
