ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - A new state leader in education comes to Rockford for her first elementary school visit.

State Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant is the Illinois senate's new chairwoman of the education committee and Friday she made Whitehead Elementary School in Rockford her first elementary school stop in the state. She says the only way to make responsible decisions about education is to go out and visit schools like Whitehead.

"You can tell by the students' interview that they are very excited to be here. They have art, they have music, they have PE they have strong academic classes. We want to make sure that our students, no matter where they're at, have a solid education. We get a bad rap. People say public schools are failing. I'm here to say I'm disagreeing," said Bertino-Tarrant.

The Shorewood Democrat has spent more than twenty years as an educator in Will County.
