Scholarship opens for RVC emergency responders students

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- At Winnebago County's memorial to honor 9/11 emergency responders, a new scholarship is introduced aiming to create a new generation of officers, firefighters and paramedics.

The Winnebago County 9/11 Memorial is now partnering with the Rock Valley College Foundation, creating a scholarship program for RVC students who want to begin a career as emergency responders.

Rockford Fire Captain Will Pederson says there is no better day than today to honor anyone willing to risk their lives to help others.

"It's unfortunate as to why we have to remember 9/11 every year in the way we do, but we couldn't think of a better symbol and a better day to recognize the possibilities that we have to make a connection with someone who is just deciding they want to go into firefighting or the police force", says Pederson.

Right now, the $350 scholarship will go to just one student, but Pederson hopes to grow the scholarship to eventually allow for three scholarships, one each for fire, police and EMS.
