Salvation Army kicks off Red Kettle Campaign

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- With the holiday season approaching quickly, the Salvation Army kicks off one of its largest annual fundraisers.

The Red Kettle Campaign will bring ringing bells to Winnebago County through Christmas Eve, starting at CherryVale Mall on Friday morning. The red kettles and bells have been symbols of the holiday season around the area for more than 120 years.

In 2017, the Salvation Army's goal was to raise $240,000 for families in need over the holidays.

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to ring bells this season. You can sign up by calling the Salvation Army volunteer department at 815-972-1134.

Bells are ringing across our community as The Salvation Army begins its annual Red
Kettle Campaign. On Friday, November 9th at 10:30am at CherryVale Mall center court Mark
Peterson, the general manager, will welcome The Salvation Army and their kettles back to the
Mall and call attention to the Giving Tree which opens the day after Thanksgiving. Major Mark
Martsolf, The Salvation Army Winnebago County Coordinator, will talk about this year's goals
and the importance of the Army's work in the county. Diane Tolcher, Community Relations and
Volunteer Services Director, will give an appeal for volunteers for the kettles. Beverly Peterson,
the Director of Development, will introduce the Press Packet and Annual Report.
At 6:00 p.m. that evening, November 9th, The Salvation Army brass band and bell
ringers will be on hand to greet Santa Claus as he makes his first holiday appearance at the
Mall.
The red kettles and bells have been symbols of the season for 122 years in the Rockford
area. They serve as reminders to all who pass by that there are people in this community who
are in need. The Salvation Army encourages the community to volunteer to ring bells from now
to December 24 by signing up at Registertoring.com or calling The Salvation Army Volunteer
Department at 815-972-1134.
Interviews will be available with Major Martsolf, Diane Tolcher and Beverly Peterson.
