SCAM ALERT: Rockford Police Fundraiser

By  |

ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR) – A new scam is making its rounds. If your phone rings, and someone tells you they’re a cop, you may need to call police.

"If one person calls the police there are dozens of them out there that didn't call police or perhaps even made the donation," warned Rockford Police Assistant Deputy Chief Pat Hoey.

According to local authorities, a local business owner reported getting a suspicious call from someone claiming to be collecting donations for a police fundraiser. The business owner says the scammer asked for, “Hundreds of dollars;” however, Rockford’s finest say they are not doing any fundraising at the moment. Police say they post fundraising efforts to the department’s Facebook page and/or official city websites. If you receive one of these peculiar calls you should report it immediately.
