ROCKTON, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockton fire and rescue teams make a harrowing rescue after a woman's canoe capsize in the Rock River.

Crews responded to a call for a woman in distress just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday just east of the railroad bridge in Rockton.

The caller heard screams for help after the woman's boat capsized shortly after launching her kayak from Settlers Park. She was alone.

Due to heavy currents, the woman could not get back into the kayak but threw her anchor to keep the vessel stationary.

Rockton Fire says the woman's personal floatation device kept her above water.

Rescue crews were able to remove her unharmed and retrieve the kayak.

Chief Wilson reminds boaters to avoid going alone.
