ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- A Rockford man was arrested Friday morning after he was allegedly trying to steal more than $1,000 worth of Walmart products.

Danuel Schmuacher, 37, was arrested while Rockford police and fire officials were participating in the Salvation's Army "Battle of the Bells" drive.

Schumacher was confronted by an officer outside the Walmart around on 3859 Northridge Drive around 10:20 a.m. Police say he tried to run away from the area, but was stopped after a brief foot chase.

Schumacher was charged with felony retail theft and resisting/obstructing an officer.

“While officers were volunteering for a noteworthy cause, they were quickly reminded of how important it is to remain ever-vigilant,” said Assistant Deputy Chief Carla Redd. “I am very grateful for the dedication the officers show to the community on a daily basis.”

Schumacher was taken to Winnebago County Jail. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty by the court of law.
