Man indicted for robbery, standoff at Dollar Tree in Rockford

A man accused of an attempted robbery and standoff at Dollar Tree earlier this month was indicted on all charges.

Stanley Turner, 36, faces a 10-count bill that includes armed robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and aggravated unlawful restraint.

Police say Turner allegedly entered the Dollar Tree at 6340 E. State St. and grabbed two female employees. The employees were not hurt and escaped the area.

Officers found Turner hiding inside a loft in the store. He was allegedly armed with a handgun during the standoff.

Turner's next court hearing is set for March 9.

Rockford Police identify the suspect who hid in a Dollar Tree early Monday armed with a handgun.

Officials say the standoff ended peacefully after Stanley Turner, 36, of Rockford entered the store around 9 p.m. Sunday at 6340 East State Street.

He allegedly grabbed two female workers and pushed them to the back of the store. They were able to escape unhurt when officers arrived on scene.

Turner stayed inside the business armed with a handgun.

Police tried several times for hours to make contact with the suspect.

They sent a K9 officer inside and located Turner hiding in a loft.

Turner was then taken into custody and charged with armed robbery, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated battery to a senior citizen and two counts of unlawful restraint.

Police recovered a handgun and stolen cash inside the Dollar Tree store.

Turner was taken to the Winnebago County Jail. He's considered innocent until proven guilty.

A man is in custody after apparently trying to rob a Dollar Tree store in Rockford Sunday night.

Rockford Police said a suspect holed up in the store for about three hours before he was eventually arrested about 1 a.m. Monday.

Employees in the store were all able to get out safely. When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect ran to the back of the store. Officers believe he had a gun. The suspect is now in custody.

His name and any charges filed against him have not been released at this time.

When officers got there, people inside had already made it out. Witnesses described the situation to officers as an attempted armed robbery.

At this point, police have the person contained within the store, and they’re trying to contain him.

Police have not made contact with suspect yet, but they are trying to work out a plan to make contact.

Police believe that the person is armed. The officers looked through the windows of Dollar Tree and saw the suspect run to the back of the store, and had what they believed was a handgun.

Police ask everyone to avoid the area right now.
