Coroner releases name of Rockford homicide victim

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Updated: Oct. 11, 3:55 p.m.

The Rockford coroner says Prince Chatman was the victim who died after suffering from a gunshot wound on Wednesday.

The death is under investigation from the Rockford Police Department. Toxicology tests will be available in around three weeks.

Rockford police say the death was the 15th confirmed murder in the area this year.

A 35-year-old man is dead following a car accident possibly caused by a shooting.

Police Chief Dan O'Shea says it appears the man was killed in a targeted attack. He has called a homicide investigation for the death.

Police say the victim was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound after a vehicle crashed around 4 p.m. The victim was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim's name has not yet been released.

Investigators are speaking with witnesses to learn more about the shooting. Officers are still on the scene.

Rockford police have responded to a shooting near Chestnut Street and Johnston Avenue in Rockford.
