ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz says 16-year-old Marshawna Williams is the female who was killed Wednesday night in the 2300 block of Clover Avenue.
Rockford police responded to a residence in reference to a shooting just before 8 p.m. and found the female victim dead on the scene.
The preliminary cause of death is a gunshot wound.
Neighbors react to the shooting, telling 23 News they were shocked when they heard the news because their neighborhood is normally a pretty quiet area of town. A few residents believe crime is beginning to happen all over Rockford, and something needs to change.
"When I’m sending my daughter to school and there's a shooting up the street, I mean it's terrible it makes me just want to keep her home," said Taelor Ferruzza, who’s 6-year-old daughter attends Lathrop Elementary School. This school is right down the road from where 16-year old Marshawna Williams was found shot and killed Wednesday night.
"We moved over towards Rockford and I’m regretting it to be honest. It's so sad that stuff like this is happening," said Ferruzza.
Willie Woodard has lived in this neighborhood for 30 years. He says it's normally a pretty quiet area, but believes crime is starting to happen all across Rockford.
"You can't get away from this stuff. The saying is, ‘I do to him what he did to me,’ so that's why you've got the crime. You've got teenagers that don't have anything to do, so they take it out in the street, they hustle in the streets, they learn in the streets," said Willie Woodard.
Ferruzza believes police need to be riding through this area of town more often to lower the crime rate and protect the children.
"I feel like Rockford police just aren't able to keep up on the neighborhoods over here and that's why crime like this keeps happening," said Ferruzza.
Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit are conducting a follow-up investigation into the suspicious death.
