ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Rockford Police Department swore in 12 officers and handed out several prestigious awards during a packed ceremony Friday.
Rockford Police chief Dan O'Shea awarded four Medals of Valor for the officers who were first on scene for deputy Jacob Keltner, a deputy shot and killed in March while serving a warrant with U.S. Marshals in Rockford.
O'Shea also handed out a life-saving award and presented ten letters of commendation.
The 12 newest officers will now complete 18 months of training at the Illinois Police Academy and in Rockford.
