Rockford police give out hundreds of backpacks, school supplies to children

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockford police want to make sure every child goes back to school with classroom essentials.

Officers gave away hundreds of backpacks to students ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade. Each bag is stuffed with supplies, including a notebook, folder, pencils, glue sticks and a pencil box.

Police from the Benevolent and Protective Association organized the morning and afternoon backpack giveaways.

The second giveaway event is underway at Rockford Police District 1 located in the 1000 block of West State Street. Officers will pass out backpacks until 8 p.m.
