YOKOSUKA, Japan (WIFR) -- A Rockford native takes on new roles with the U.S. Navy after serving for nearly one year.

Seaman Apprentice Jazmine Norfleet serves aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain. She patrols one of the world’s busiest maritime regions as part of the leading-edge of U.S. 7th Fleet, according to a blog from Navy Outreach.

“Serving here is very eventful, a little stressful, but it's all for a reason and eventually, it will help you meet your goals in the end,” said Norfleet. “Whether or not you want to stay or make it short term, at least give it a try... You might end up liking it, you never know. I love it.”

Norfleet, a 2018 graduate of East High School, hopes to become a mass communication specialist while serving overseas.

She credits some of her success in the Navy to lessons learned from growing up in Rockford.
