UPDATE: Suspect arrested after hours-long standoff on Church Street

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- UPDATE: Rockford police say Mykel Curry surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody after a three and a half hour standoff Tuesday.

29-year-old Mykel Curry eventually surrendered to authorities about 9 p.m. Tuesday. Police received a tip that Curry was inside a home in the 1900 block of North Church Street. He refused to come out, but after hours of negotiations Curry surrendered peacefully.

Curry was wanted for shooting at a man Monday on 27th street. According to police, that man fired back hitting a second suspect who was with Curry. The second suspect and the resident were not charged.

Curry faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Rockford Police are on scene in the 1900 block of Church Street for activity involving a wanted individual.

Police received information that a suspect, wanted in connection to a shooting on 27th Street on Monday was in the 1900 block of N. Church St.

According to police, preliminary information indicates the suspect is contained to a residence. A SWAT team is on scene.

Police say homes in the immediate area of the residence where the suspect is located have been evacuated as a precaution.

Police have issued a warrant for a Rockford man accused of exchanging gunfire with a local resident, which led to another man being shot in the leg.

Mykel Curry, 29, is charged with unlawful use of weapons by a felon two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Rockford police responded to the 400 block of 27th Street after reports of a shooting. Investigators say two black male suspects had confronted a resident over a previous dispute.

Curry allegedly showed a handgun and fired several rounds at the resident. Then, the resident reportedly fired back using his own handgun.

Police say the second suspect with Curry was shot in the leg and treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

The second suspect and the resident were not charged, according to police. A warrant has been issued for Curry's arrest with a bond set at $50,000.
