UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- An estimated $300,000 in damages was done to a home after it caught fire this afternoon. The Rockford Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 3600 block of Hermitage Trail just after two this afternoon. When crews got to the scene the large volume of fire mixed with the weather conditions forced the crew to request a second alarm.
The department says when they got to the home, the three car garage was heavily involved and heavy smoke was coming from the roof. There were no injuries involved and no one was home at the time of the fire. The department says the weather played a significant role in bringing the fire under control.
"You know, weather's always an issue. With the wind today it made it a little more challenging. The guys on the scene were able to get the fire under control within about 30 minutes,” said Rockford Fire Captain Todd Monahan.
Fire crews say one of the neighboring homes also received minor heat damage. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The department says right now the home is uninhabitable until repairs can be done. The family is staying with relatives in the meantime.
