Holiday travelers are being treated with a nice surprise in the Stateline this week.
Gas prices in Rockford have dropped 15 cents on average over the past week, according to
. The city's average price currently costs $2.13 per gallon, the lowest price on Christmas Eve since 2015.
Locally, gas prices are around 34 cents cheaper than a year ago and 41 cents cheaper compared to last month.
Average gas prices in Boone, DeKalb, Ogle and Stephenson counties have also dropped to average prices between $2.12 and $2.17.
"Gas prices broadly continue to move lower across much of the country as oil prices continue to melt away," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
DeHaan says 31 states, including Illinois, have at least one gas station offering gas under $2 per gallon this week.
