ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR)--- As a staple of downtown, the Rockford Woman's Club has watched the city grow.
Since 1897, multiple groups of women banded together to create the Rockford Federation for Woman's Club.
Completely funded by woman before the Civil War, it created outreach programs to serve the community and the immigrant population.
They helped immigrants through English classes and understanding the American culture. Now they have returned back to their roots and once again are helping the immigrant community through a mentorship program.
"We have ladies that are working with children that are coming in that might need a little but of mentoring, and then we also have ladies who are working with immigrant women," says Nancy Whitlock, president of the club.
Through the years the club has kept its essence with minor modernization but there is need for funds to continue its work.
Renovations on its building are needed. Whitlock is confident with upcoming event to cover those costs.
The club's next event with be hosted on January 8 featuring comedian, Keith Kelly.
