ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockford University marks the official start of construction with a $3.5 million expansion on the 3,800 square foot addition to the Seaver Physical Education Center.

The university held a ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday designed by Stateline architecture firm Larson and Darby Group. This expansion will include an enhanced weight and fitness space, more classrooms, and will replace the heating and cooling system with a more energy-efficient one.

The project is expected to be completed by the start of the 2020 academic year.

“Our commitment here is to improve, in every way we can, the student experience,” said Eric Fulcomer, the Rockford University President. “So our focus is on students, we have 1,225 students here from 38 states, 20 countries and so we bring together students from all over and our goal is that they have an excellent experience and prepared for the world after they leave here.”
