ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- For the past 18 years, the Rockford Reads program has been helping elementary students acquire the reading skills they need to move forward.
Nearly 175 volunteers read with second graders in every RPS 205 school, each week, with help from the Rockford Rotary Club. But this year, organizers say they are seeking even more people to help out.
Volunteers can choose which school they would like to help out. Organizers say the program impacts more than just the students' reading skills.
"The original goal was to help the students academically, but what we have learned over the last several years is that they are gaining a lot socially and emotionally,." says Rockford Reads chairperson Kathy Kwiat-Hess.
