ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- A young woman is dead after a shooting on Rockford's west side.
Police say it happened just after 12:00 Thursday in the 3100 block of Wallin Avenue, near Auburn Street and Kilburn Avenue. Witnesses tell police they heard about two or three shots from inside a car in a dead-end alley. Police believe that young woman was talking with someone inside the car just moments before the shooting. Police are now looking for the car, although no description of the vehicle has been released.
Witnesses say the conversation appeared friendly and they didn't hear any loud voices or arguments before the gun shots rang out.
"So the vehicle was in the grass just behind that building, so just a weird place for it to be unless they discovered this was a dead-end road and were trying to take a shortcut through the back of the alley. Just odd, and that building is abandoned so just a weird place for it to be," says Assistant Deputy Chief Pat Hoey with the Rockford Police Department.
Businesses in the area say there's usually lots of traffic that circles the dead-end alley. Right now, police are calling the shooting suspicious.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Rockford Police Department or Rockford Area Crime Stoppers.
