One person is dead and four others are injured after a shooting at the Way-Low gas station on West State Street.

Police say of the four people hurt, one person is in critical condition and three others were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police first tweeted about the incident asking the public to avoid the area just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators believe this was a targeted shooting, but are unsure how many of the victims were intended targets. Police have not released any suspect information or the name of the victim at this time.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea said this shooting is part of an alarming trend of violence over the past few weeks.

"We have been doing so well for the past three years, four years going downward," said Chief O'Shea. "Now we're starting to trend back up a little bit on the violent crime. It's very disheartening, It's aggravating, quite honestly. We keep investigating and we are arresting people for some of the shootings and possession of weapons but we need the public's help."
