ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- In an effort to reduce juvenile crime, the Rockford Park District Police Department is stepping up.
Park district officers are teaching nearly 20 local teens in a three-day youth police camp. With hands-on activities, squad car tours and video scenarios, children had the chance to learn what officers do on a daily basis.
"It's important for the kids to know that so they don't hurt themselves, or get somebody else hurt," says Rockford Park District Sergeant Leo Roganwicz. "They understand what we are trying to do, we're all trying to get home at the end of the day."
On Tuesday, children participated in mock traffic stops.
