ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockford Lutheran students stepped up Tuesday to help those impacted by Hurricane Dorian.
Students joined forces with Alpine Fireside Health Center and the American Red Cross to collect more than 8,000 water bottles.
On Tuesday, students moved and packed the water bottles. The donations will offer relief for those impacted by Hurricane Dorian in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Rockford Lutheran junior Gloria Okoroti pitched the idea after a similar project. Over the summer, she volunteered with Alpine Fireside Health, which collected 3,000 bottles of water to remember nearly 3,000 people lost in in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
"I think its important that we all as students find a way to help the community," says Okoroti. "We're all in school, having a drive at a school, helping the students give back to the community and learning about service."
One student collected more than 1,900 water bottles to donate to those in need.
