Rockford Lutheran seniors continue 'Run for the Lockers'

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Every year seniors at Rockford Lutheran school Lineup and make a mad dash to pick their lockers. The first student to claim the locker gets it.

"As soon as those doors opened I knew I just had to run as fast as I could,” said Madigan Ziehr, a Rockford Lutheran senior.

Ziehr camped at the school overnight so she could be ready to go when the school doors opened.

"I never thought I would ever camp out at the school. But it was fun and we had a good time," Ziehr said.

And for Ziehr it was worth it. She got what she calls the perfect spot.

"In my mind, it's not a part of the main hallway technically and it's also close to the senior doors, so I can just kind of come in and come out easier, and I am in my section of the hallway," Ziehr said.

"Even if you are the last one to get to your locker you made a choice and it's important to give them that opportunity to be involved," said Don Gillingham, executive director of Rockford Lutheran School.

Gillingham believes this activity is a way to start the year on a positive note.

"It’s great for seniors as Mr. Kortze helps them choose a college. We are looking for a whole year of choices and the excitement that drove today's choice will help fuel them for the whole year,” Gillingham said.

Classes at Rockford Lutheran start August 20.
