Rockford City Market celebrates 10-year anniversary

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) Rockford's outdoor city market returns next month for its tenth season and organizers plan to make this the best year yet.

“It’s kind of hard to believe it's been 10 years but on the other had it feels like it's been forever," said Executive Director for the Rock River Development Partnership Cathy McDermott.

The RRDP opened Rockford City Market a decade ago and is proud to see it grow year after year.

"The enthusiasm the community shows as we unveil new vendors and new concepts of food or different musicians we have coming but we look forward to it," McDermott said.

McDermott feels this year will top all the others.

"With our 10 year anniversary, the indoor city market opening up and just kind of the interplay between the indoor and the outdoor on a Friday night," McDermott said.

To celebrate the 10th-anniversary RRDP will team up with Runner's Image to host the “Race to the Market 5K” on June seventh.

"The 5K is going to be featuring a course that will be heading kind of on the southwest side of Rockford," said Runner’s Image Owner Steve Jaycox.

The market also will include nine other activities Including discounts, guest bartenders, games and other contests.

"We will have a 10-year t-shirt design contest. We are inviting members of the community to put forth their best design," McDermott said.

But, McDermott says without the support from city leaders this market wouldn't be possible.

"Really what Rockford is all about is celebrating our diversity and enjoying our neighbors. So, I am really honored just to be a cheerleader for the city market," said Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara.

Rockford's outdoor city market opens Friday, May 17th and runs through September 27th.
