ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rock Valley College received two grants totaling more than $28,000 to offer more opportunities for students in need.

The school received nearly $16,000 to purchase new laptops. The school plans to upgrade current laptops as part of the college’s laptop rental program for students who cannot afford a computer needed for coursework.

“Nearly half of our students receive some sort of financial assistance to fund their education,” said Dr. Doug Jensen, President of Rock Valley College. "This grant will be a tremendous help for many students who truly need it.”

Additionally, the school received a $12,000 grant for supplemental instruction for Gateway Courses. The money will be used to support students who may have a high risk for low grades.

“This specific grant will help us tremendously with persistence and retention efforts," Jensen said.

The grants were supported by two funds from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois.
