ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Taking care of the community one blood donation at a time. Dozens of Rockfordians give a gift straight from the heart.

Partnering with radio station Q98.5 and Lou Bachrodt Auto Mall, the Rock River Valley Blood Center held its annual donation drive with the first 98 donors getting special t-shirts. All registered givers entered a drawing to see Blake Shelton in concert next month.

As the only provider of blood products and services to 10 regional hospitals across Illinois and Wisconsin, RRVBC needs 700 donors per week to help patients. The cold and flu season is making it tough to keep their quota.

"We're low on all blood types right now," said Kristin Kamman from the Rock River Valley Blood Center. "This winter has been very challenging because of influenza and the stomach flu and viral season, so our blood levels have really declined. So we're needing everybody who's well and healthy to come out and participate and donate blood for us."
