Rock River, Pecatonica River closed over flood warnings

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Rock River and Pecatonica River are closed until further notice in Winnebago County over flood warnings.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has closed both rivers, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office. The Rock River is currently under a flood advisory.

The Rock River at Machesney Park, near the areas of Shore Drive, have flooded in some capacity five times over the last year. The National Weather Service forecasts that area of the river to crest near 11.7 feet on Tuesday of next week. This means the river will remain in its flood stage for many days.

There is also a flood warning in effect for the Rock River at Byron affecting Ogle County, the Rock River at Rockton affecting Winnebago County and the Pecatonica River near Shirland affecting Winnebago County.

The Village of Machesney Park is also undergoing sandbagging operations. Sandbagging operations are available at the southwest corner of the former Machesney Park Mall located at 8702 N 2nd Street.
