ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) According to Ride Illinois, Rockford is becoming more bike friendly. Skip Stienecker from Rockford Bicycle Company agrees.

"Just the recognition alone is just fantastic. Rockford and Loves Park are really moving leaps and bounds. They are doing a great job with the bike trails,” said Stienecker

He notices a steady growth in customers at his shop and says the trails and an attentive bike community helps.

"People are in general, becoming more aware of bicycles. So, the motorists out there are becoming more and more aware. They are giving us a little more space on the road,” said Stienecker.

Even in the dead of winter, customers are buying bikes.

"I work from home, so the main thing is to get out and exercise. Half an hour a day is what the doctor is saying,” said Shawn McMorris.

Over the past 10 years, Rockford added bike routes throughout the area including with the help of donations and federal grant money. One of those parks is Atwood.

People from the Rockford Park District say even the amount of people riding their bike in the winter has increased.

"It is fantastic that we are increasing our funding towards making Rockford a better place to recreate, and for pedestrians and cyclists by a six fold basically,” said Steven Fross from the park district.
