WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- The aftermath of flooding settles in for hundreds in Winnebago County, but the Red Cross is chipping in with help to make recovery a little easier.
The American Red Cross of Northwest Illinois joined county leaders Tuesday afternoon to pass out emergency flood supplies, including clean-up kits, shovels, work gloves, rakes and dusk masks.
Red Cross leaders say it was important to offer assistance, but it's only part of the recovery process.
"The first step is what we call the 'respond for the relief' process, which is often when the American Red Cross sets up shelter," said Carlo Heathcote, Red Corss senior disaster program officer. "We've had a shelter in Machesney Park, and we recently put that on standby. At this point in time the clients, who were at that shelter have been able to return to their homes."
Winnebago County residents had the opportunity to pick up supplies at the former Machesney Park mall at 8702 N. Second St. If you were not able to stop by and need assistance, call the Red Cross Flood Helpline at 872-529-1784.
