System #2 of the week is eyeing the Stateline for this upcoming weekend. The good news is once again it'll be a mainly rain-maker for us, with the very heavy snow staying well north. We also have the 7th annual Stroll on State festival in downtown Rockford Saturday to talk about too. Yes, there will be rain at the festival but there is some good news. Let's break it down here:
FRIDAY EVENING: Rain moves in from the southwest. A few spots could see a few flakes but gradually will all be rain. This continues overnight and into Saturday. Temperatures in the mid-to-lower 30's for lows.
STROLL ON STATE SATURDAY: MOST of the time on Saturday, the rain will be relatively light. This will be prevalent especially in the morning and periodically through the afternoon. However, a few "heavier" downpours sneaking in the afternoon can't be ruled out either. I also wouldn't be surprised if one of those downpours produced a rumble or two of thunder.
The rainfall will continue through Saturday evening but for the festival, many nearly dry or mostly very light rain times are in the forecast. This is great news for festival-goers! The Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau announced that all of the outdoor activities will go on as scheduled too. Also remember that there are PLENTY of indoor activities through the festival too. You can see a full list of activities here.
If you plan on attending Stroll on State, temperatures will be in the upper 30's to near 40, gradually rising throughout the festival. However, winds will be gusting between 25-30 mph at times. Go prepared with rain gear like a poncho and wear a few layers just in case you will be outside for the bigger attractions like the parade and tree lighting/fireworks.
This is also a big travel period for people both leaving and coming back to the Stateline after Thanksgiving. The good news is that the heavier, accumulating snow will be north of Rockford well into Wisconsin and the upper Midwest. If you see the graphic below, some spots could see upwards of a foot of snow in those regions. Luckily for us, after a break Saturday late evening, it'll be mainly rain mixed with snow.
SUNDAY: Breezy conditions will also continue into Sunday where the wintry mix rain/snow showers will be on-and-off. There will also be dry times, as this will be very scattered. I wouldn't be surprised if on grassy surfaces, a small slushy snow accumulation comes. These would be less than an inch if anything. On the roads, there could be small slushy spots but will be mainly okay for Sunday. Regardless, take it a bit slower during these wintry mix times too.
All of the graphics are at the bottom of this article with the timing of the rain for Stroll on State, rainfall potential by the end of the weekend along with the wintry mix chances for Sunday.
