ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- One student from Rock Valley College looks to follow the footsteps of first responders after receiving a scholarship on the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Joseph Krein earned the scholarship from the Winnebago County 9/11 Emergency Responders Memorial Board.

For a second straight year, the board gave the scholarship to a RVC student pursuing a degree through a fire, police or EMS program.

Krien was just days away from his first birthday when the Twin Towers fell.

"Reading all the stuff about 9/11, watching movies, seeing the documentaries, and just hearing other people and what they remember, it just kind of put things into perspective," says Krein.

Krein says his dream is to one day be as brave as the firefighters were that day.
