ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Rockford Mass Transit District prepares to open doors for its newly-renovated downtown transfer building next week.

The renovations allow customers with wheelchairs or other mobility devices to navigate through the facility much easier. The facility has welcomed several upgrades, including enhanced information system displays, charging stations, a family restroom and a touchscreen computer system.

RMTD says this is just phase one of the project. Phase two involves the re-design of the outside bus and customer waiting area. These renovations will continue into the spring with an estimated completion date of May 2019.

The entire project was funded by several state and federal grants. The renovations cost around $6.1 million in total.

The downtown transfer center will open to the public at 5 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 11
